Album Review - Craig Gould: ´Songs from the Campfire´

Craig Gould has just released his debut album ‘Songs from The Campfire’

Through his folksy Americana style, Craig Gould presents an album earnestly exploring the topic of mental health. Working in partnership with the mental health organisation CALM, as well as recently joining the Tanglewood guitar roster, he combines his lived experience of mental health along with his excellent musicianship to craft catchy, yet sincere songs.

The tracks are all beautifully arranged, giving space for the other musicians involved in the album. For example, ‘Out of the Woods’ gives prominence to the aptly rustic fiddle refrain. Despite being an album about mental health, it is certainly not a dirge: Songs such as ‘Burned’ have some toe-tapping rhythms and sing-along choruses which would certainly work well round a campfire.

Although remaining thematically on point, Craig works hard to give each track a different feel. The more melancholic and wistful undertones of the tracks ‘Dreamer’ and ‘Captain of the Sea’ provide well-crafted sonic contrast.

Overall an excellent and heartfelt album which I’m sure will be well received on their 2023 tour.
