Album Review - Dan Whitehouse: ´Reflections on The Glass Age´

A father’s ode to smiley emojis, midnight WhatsApps and accidentally being on mute.

Whilst Dan Whitehouse was isolated from his child and struggling with the restrictions on live performance imposed by Covid, he found solace in the connectivity that the digital age has allowed and collaborated virtually with Swedish electronica artist Gustaf Ljunggren to create ‘The Glass Age’. Revisiting the songs from this album, he has taken the tracks in a new stripped-back acoustic direction in his latest release, ´Reflections on The Glass Age´.

Resting upon soft, delicate piano and acoustic guitars, these new arrangements help to magnify the tenderness of the songs. At times giving them a pleasantly soporific lullaby quality. The gentle female vocal harmonies in ‘Thin Blue Line’ gel beautifully with Dan’s voice and help make this a standout song of the album, evoking ‘icy long-distance longing’. The final track ‘New Love’ written with Patricia Morris, Beth Aggett, Tom Milner, Mimi Jasson, & Alex Lowe is a great conclusion to the album, the catchy refrain softly floating away in the breeze.

As always with Dan Whitehouse’s music, he stays stylistically and thematically true to the concept of each album; thus creating something new, creative and delicate, whilst exploring the possibilities of where to take his sound and song writing next.

Dan will continue to tour these songs throughout 2024 in a series of ‘A Night Of Glass’ gigs, alongside a selection from his fine back catalogue of six solo albums, including the recent collaborative Arts Council supported radio ballads style, award nominated ´Voices From The Cones’ - real life stories of history and community of glassmaking in the Black Country, told in story and song.
