Album Review - debut from TikTok sensation The Wellermen
The Wellermen first became a viral Tiktok sensation two years ago, now they have released their much-anticipated, self-titled debut album
Through their acapella arrangements they explore an impressive variety of repertoire, ranging from sea shanties, classic traditional songs and even a cover of Ed Sheeran’s Nancy Mulligan. Of course, their hit song, ‘Wellerman,’ which led to their initial fame, brings the album to a stirring close.
My personal favourite track is ‘Hoist the Colours’; the depth of the male bass vocals is incredible and its slow tempo percussion accompaniments makes it feel like an ominous march into battle.
The album will feel very familiar to any folk club regulars, as The Wellermen present their versions of popular chorus classics such as ‘Parting Glass’, ‘Drunken Sailor’ and ‘Old Maui’. I’ll be interested to see if they go on to explore lesser-known material in future releases.
Overall, it’s a great first release and I think it has potential to bring Folk Acapella into mainstream popular culture. I’m sure they will have an exciting summer entertaining festival crowds with their rousing vocal deliveries and rich harmonies.
