Album Review - ´Fae´ by SeeD

Album Review - ´Fae´ by SeeD

5-piece SeeD invite you to step through the Veil with their new fantasy folk release Fae.

Dutch/Irish pagan folk band SeeD take inspiration from fairy tales, celtic mythology and books such as Lord of the Rings. They weave together an ethereal, cinematic sound, drawing upon an eclectic collection of acoustic instruments from around the world, including bouzouki, flutes, bodhran and didgeridoo, to name but a few! This impressive range of masterfully played instruments really helps to engage the listener, as new timbres are introduced throughout the album.

For me, the standout track on the album is ‘Satyr Dance’. The driving 7/8 groove, combined with layers of melody on whistles and flutes, is very infectious and conjures up images of drunken lustful mythological creatures leading an erratic, seductive dance.

Due to Covid restrictions it took SeeD three years to complete this album. But perhaps the longevity of the recording process is what gives this album such a sophisticated and refined sound. It seems like each arrangement and subtle layer of instrumentation has been crafted with great consideration.

The album is also complemented by the artwork of percussionist Robin Dekker. SeeD have produced something quite special; simultaneously mystical, playful and adventurous. I could imagine this album providing the perfect soundtrack for a wild fantasy film!
