Album Review - MF Tomlinson ‘We Are Still Wild Horses’

‘We Are Still Wild Horses’ is an ambitious new release from Australian-born singer-songwriter MF Tomlinson

This four-track album drags the listener through the inner turmoil of a tormented mind. Written in London over a pandemic winter, the isolation and tension seeps into every note.

The opening track ‘A Cloud’ is the only song which looks out; an observational song from the perspective of the narrator peering out of their window searching for inspiration. The wailing strings and cinematic instrumental arrangements forewarn the listener of unsettled times to come, as the album cascades into the broody introversion of ‘Winter Time Blues’. This song delves deep into the inner psyche, with delicate vocals supported by dark brass harmonies. The electric guitar solo towards the end of the song sounds like a chainsaw tearing apart a tortured soul.

The instrumental and vocal arrangements are brilliant throughout, but the slightly twisted vocal chant that concludes ‘End of The Road’ is particularly hypnotizing and leads on perfectly to the final track, ‘We Are Still Wild Horses’.

The closing track is over 20 minutes long and is a surreal dreamscape floating between the cracks of our darkest imaginations. At times beautiful and serene, sometimes dissonant and maddening. It’s an impressive piece.

I’d definitely recommend this album to any Leonard Cohen or Nick Cave fans.

A fantastic piece of work, but certainly not for the faint hearted! Be prepared to get lost in the labyrinth of the mind.
