Album Review - Sara Möller: ´How and How´
Sara Möller’s latest release ‘How and How’ is a genre-defying piece of work
This album weaves through dark jazz and ethereal folk, creating its own twisted cabaret. Sara’s distinct and poignant vocal style creates an interesting ambience, somewhere between beautiful and slightly disturbed!
What I like so much about this album is the way in which it manages to shift so quickly from the gritty to serene. Take the outro for the final track ‘I Like You In Everyway’; the angst-ridden distorted guitar, yelps and screams through a solo over the pulsating percussion, but yet suddenly transcends into a dreamy piano outro which sounds like it’s drifting out of a crackling Gramophone.
The sensitivity of arrangement is strong throughout but I particularly like some of the more broken grooves. The staggered beat and conversational soloists over ‘Would You Please’ conjure up the image of a drunken jilted circus stumbling to their next location!
This is a strong album and you can tell Sara has a lot of experience under her belt. It doesn’t surprise me that Swedish magazine ‘Lira’ has placed it in its top ten list of new albums, and I hope it is received as well outside of Sara Möller’s homeland!
