Album Review - Twin Headed Wolf: ‘Altarwise’

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Twin Headed Wolf´s first and final album, Altarwise

Shrouded in ritual, mystery and time travel, the twin sisters´ haunting harmonies take you on a surreal and mystical journey, well beyond the realms of any notions of convention. Defining themselves as ‘Scrap Yard Folk’, even this doesn’t begin to do justice to their precarious balancing act as they seesaw between serene, ghostly, eerily beautiful, and ridiculous.

Hailing from Lahinch in Ireland, the sisters used to perform extensively at festivals as well as playing at more eccentric venues such as caves and tombs. However, this album will be their only recorded offering - so this may be your only chance to experience the utterly unique sounds of Twin Headed Wolf.

The twins are both experimental time travellers, and this creation has made some quantum leaps. After the initial recording sessions in 2013, the album jumped to completion in 2017, before the masters appeared in 2024.

Possibly however, this album will never be constrained to a fixed time and space, just as it unashamedly refutes restraining into any specific musical genre. Perhaps it’s too wild, raw and magical for such temporal constraints.

Musically, the album has an astounding blend of instrumentation, including bowed double bass, tea pots and bones to name just a few. The lyrics are filled with intrigue and entice you into this bizarre yet brilliant listening experience.

This is the most interesting album I’ve heard in 2024: Too free to be caged, too feral to be tamed, too magical to explain.

You can buy one of the limited edition run of vinyls (only 250 in total) on Bandcamp
