For over a decade Bellowhead have stood at the top of Britain’s musical landscape. Arguably the most successful British folk band of the past 12 years, Bellowhead have placed themselves at the cutting edge of the contemporary music scene, projecting the tradition and mystery of ancient English and European music to the world.

 

Their third album, ‘Hedonism’, was the highest-selling independently-released traditional folk album of all time, sold a staggering 60,000 copies and was awarded a ‘Silver Disc’.  Their fourth album ‘Broadside’ entered the UK album charts at number 16, spawned an A-listed single on BBC Radio 2 and won ‘Best Album’ at the 2013 Folk Awards. 

 

Coupling their great success through studio releases, Bellowhead have carved themselves a storming reputation for their live performance, winning ‘Best Live Band’ 5 times at the Radio 2 Awards.  One of the great live bands of the past decade, Bellowhead are set to embark on their final tour this April-May, with the Farewell Tour starting in Bristol on 13th April, and finishing up at Oxford Town Hall on 1stMay. An intimate concert, at the very same venue where it all began. Bellowhead’s final set of live dates will be accompanied by the release of a CD / DVD release, ‘Bellowhead Live: The Farewell Tour’ on 8th April 2016 (Navigator Records). This deluxe 2 cd+DVD compilation features 52 tracks recorded during the band’s November 2015 tour, along with a 24-page booklet. 

 

The tour, announced last year, sold out soon after the announcement was made. A few extra dates have been released along the way, but most have again sold out! Although, tickets remain at the Glasgow gig for the lucky few who snap them up. A sold out UK tour seems a exceptionally fitting way for Bellowhead to end their career, along with a live album, that will hopefully capture the energy and power of their live performance. ‘The biggest, rowdiest and quite possibly, best thing to have happened to English folk’, this is surely set to be a fantastic run of dates, with all those in attendance witnessing the final hurrah of a blistering 11-piece band.

 

The band have said, ´It´s in keeping with all the musical and theatrical traditions that make Bellowhead what it is, that we will end at our peak and leave the audience wanting more. The shows always finish on a high, and so should we’. Formed just for fun in 2004, they never imagined that one day they´d be headlining festivals and selling out tours of major concert halls, but here we are.

 

Today’s folk music owes a lot to Bellowhead. With their ferocious performances, the band have thrown folk music into previously unknown territory. Pushing the boundaries of performance and the genre, Bellowhead have spearheaded the new folk boom of the past decade, clearing the way for other excellent bands and artists to thrive on the hype they have helped to create.
