The latest EP from Benjamin Zięć & the Rarebreeds, ‘A Rebel’s Story’, is a selection of modern reinterpretations of old Nottingham-based folk songs and tales.

Through collaboration with local heritage experts in late 2021, Benjamin Zięć & the Rarebreeds began to explore the history behind Midlands folk song and the ´rebellious Nottingham characters´ who have walked the streets of the city through the ages. Delving into traditional themes such as Highwaymen, murder ballads and drinking songs, they also put their own original stamp on the tales. For example, in the track ‘The Old Angel’ they have flipped the original story praising the Nottingham Ale into a warning of the perils of modern-day drinking culture and alcoholism.

Recorded at Black Bay Studios in the Hebrides, the band clearly spent their time well, creating exquisite and varied arrangements over guitar, banjo, keys, percussions and drums. Guest Hebridean fiddle player Alastair Caplin´s talents also shine through.

Benjamin sings with the gruff honesty of a hardened man, which fits perfectly the working men´s topics being addressed. Also, remarkably, he manages to convey a vulnerability and sensitivity. Not an easy balance to achieve. 

A fascinating exploration of social history and local folklore, I appreciate their refreshing approach to revamping traditional material. Rather than trying to simply replicate music and stories from an era gone by, they have put their own contemporary twist, both to the stories/lyrics and the musical arrangements. Excellent musicianship, well-researched and an original approach, it’s one of my favourite folk releases this year!
