Harrowman - Fugitive EP Review

Fugitive EP

With intricate guitar and soaring vocals, Harrowman weaves an enchanting style of contemporary alternative folk.

This new EP ‘Fugitive’ is a homage to nature and hints at our role as a species; to turn the tide on the climate crisis we all face.

The 6 tracks on this release are predominantly guitar and vocal led, beautifully complemented by the luscious cello of Malachi Siner-Cheverst. There is also something of a rock influence in the mix, adding an unexpected slice of boisterous variety.

The opening track, ‘Trick of the light’, sets the tone for the EP, with dark fingerpicking acoustic guitar combined with yearnful slides and swells in the string sections, providing an emotive accompaniment to the vocals.  The arrangement is reminiscent of Nick Drake but Harrowman’s vocals posess a unique timbre all of their own.

The EP progresses to explore a more psychedelic sound, with ethereal overtones of electric guitar drenched liberally over the track ‘Leysa’.

The songs ‘Champ’ and ‘Rhyme and Reason’ mark a return to a more traditional folk vibe, with acoustic guitar parts taking influence from the likes of Bert Jansch and Roy Harper. The strings add some real depth to ‘Champ’, with the rich harmonies providing an enchanting climax to this heartfelt song.

‘Actus Reus’ also leaves an impression and makes an incongruous yet strong ending to the EP. Although a surprise, its rock grooves and vocals do pack some punch.  It might have been nice to hear a bit more of this style scattered throughout the EP, to integrate the rock influences and give the album some more body and drive.

Overall, the album is well produced with interesting environmental themes running throughout. Some of the lyrics get a little close to cliché but the sentiment clearly cuts through.

With his eclectic mix of styles, we will be looking forward to Harrowman’s artistic development over the next few years.
