Kate Rusby and O´Hooley & Tidow at Clifton Cathedral
The ‘first lady of Folk’, multi award winning artist Kate Rusby is announced as the headliner for Bristol Folk Festival 2020, with a magical opening concert at Clifton Cathedral
Kate Rusby will headline a special opening concert at Clifton Cathedral, in a double header with O’Hooley & Tidow on Friday 1 May 2020.
Often hailed as the ‘first lady of folk’, Kate Rusby first announced herself to the music press in 1999 with a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize - a remarkable feat for a folk singer. Since then, she has continued to transcend the genre, forging an impressive 20-year career, breaking records and headlining everywhere from the Royal Albert Hall to Cambridge Folk Festival. Considered the biggest musician in folk, Kate Rusby will appear with her virtuoso band, hand-picked from the UK’s finest musicians.
“Everybody loves and respects Kate Rusby, not just for her lovely voice, but for the way that she has moved folk forward while remaining true to tradition…” The Sunday Times
Joining Kate Rusby on the opening night are O’Hooley & Tidow. Characterised by strong harmonies and humorous, heart-touching tales of the exceptional and everyday, the duo are often cited as ‘England’s answer to the McGarrigles’ (The Guardian) and are widely recognised as ‘one of British folk music’s mightiest combinations’ (Mojo). The duo gained widespread recognition for their song ‘Gentleman Jack’, the closing theme to Sally Wainwright’s BBC/HBO drama series of the same name. They arrive in Bristol on the back of a sold out ‘Gentleman Jack’ Tour.

The strong line-up for the festival is continued with Jon Boden, the first knight to Rusby’s first lady. Jon Boden is more widely recognised as the frontman of Bellowhead, a game-changing eleven-piece, who won eight BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including best live act on no less than five occasions. Jon Boden headlines Saturday 2 May at St George’s Bristol, performing with his new group The Remnant Strings. Finally the unique Caribbean-British fusion of Edward II complete the 2020 headliners, closing the festival on Sunday 3 May at St George’s with blazing horns and fiery melodies.
Bristol Folk Festival takes place from Friday 1 May – Sunday 3 May 2020 across Bristol. Clifton Cathedral, St George’s Bristol and Bristol Folk House are the main venues announced as the festival expands for 2020.
Weekend and individual tickets are now on sale for the festival ranging from £15 - £90. Weekend Tickets gain access to all shows, and all tickets are available at the Bristol Folk Festival website: www. bristolfolkfestival.org. Early booking advised!
