Make Music Day UK

Make Music Day UK

Make Music Day UK is happening on 21 June across the UK

Make Music Day is an annual set of free music events taking place in venues and public spaces – from town squares to libraries, bandstands to school halls and arts centres. It takes place on the longest day of the year – on 21 June. You can organise or attend an event near you while joining thousands of other music lovers around the world in over 120 countries!

Each year, over 800 cities in more than 120 countries around the world hold music celebrations on 21 June. This phenomenon began 35 years ago in France when their Ministry of Culture dreamed up an idea for a new kind of musical holiday. They imagined a day where free, live music would be everywhere: street corners and parks, rooftops and gardens, store fronts and mountaintops. Anyone and everyone would be able to attend, join in and play music or host performances. The dream came true; Fête de la Musique involved two thirds of the population of France last year.

Make Music Day in the UK hasn’t been around as long, but is gathering momentum. Last year there were over 180 performances across the country, reaching 10,000 people, and this year the aim is for 500 performances. Flagship events will take place across the country - see the interactive map to find an event near you. Ambassadors for Make Music Day UK include violinist Nicola Benedetti and broadcaster Jon Snow.

In Kent, Make Music Day will be the kick-off event for the brand new Tenterden Folk Festival - a two week festival celebrating the arts to be held in October 2019. Sea shanty band The Salts are proud to be taking part at St Mildred’s Church, Tenterden.

Schools will perform during the day, followed by:

Jacky Purser (guitar) Kennetts (Musical Theatre)

5:30 Beneden and Iden Green Jam (Ukelele Orchestra)

6:30 New Frontier (Americana Band)

8:30 The Salts (Modern Folk Band)

The Salts are one of the most exciting and energetic concept bands around, performing original material alongside their own interpretations of traditional songs. The band feature five seasoned musicians collectively performing a mixture of instruments as well as great harmonies, all guaranteed to get the crowd singing and dancing along. Their new album ‘BRAVE’ is out now, available from HMV, iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.
