Music Declares Emergency

Music Declares Emergency

A group of artists, music industry professionals and organisations have taken a stand in response to our climate emergency

Music Declares Emergency believes that:

The continued rise in greenhouse gas emissions and the ongoing devastation of the natural world constitute a clear and present threat to life on Earth.

That an immediate governmental response is necessary to protect all life from climate and ecological catastrophe.

Music, musicians and music businesses, through their unique cultural and economic power, can lead the way in demanding the systemic changes required to secure all life on earth.

They call on all those within the industry to join them in declaring a climate emergency and to work towards making the cultural and operational changes necessary to contribute towards a carbon neutral future.

Whether you are an artist, venue, promoter, festival organiser, record label, manager, studio or publisher you can sign up to receive updates and notifications on how to get involved. A huge number of organisations, artists and individuals have already added themselves to the campaign declaration:

Music Declares a Climate and Ecological Emergency
We call on governments and media institutions to tell the truth about the climate and ecological emergency.
We call on governments to act now to reverse biodiversity loss and reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by no later than 2030.
We recognise that the emergency has arisen from global injustices and will work towards systemic change to protect life on Earth.
We acknowledge the environmental impact of music industry practices and commit to taking urgent action.
We will:
● Jointly support one another, sharing expertise as a collective industry and community.
● Speak up and out about the climate and ecological emergency.
● Work towards making our businesses ecologically sustainable and regenerative.

"I believe this is by far the most important issue facing the world today. "
— George FitzGerald

"Grassroots Music Venues are the community hubs and spaces of our towns and cities; they play an important role in bringing together and inspiring local communities. Music Venue Trust believes that these venues must seize the opportunity to take action on the Climate Emergency, and play a lead role in engaging the music industry and the public in the climate debate. "
— Music Venue Trust

"There is no doubt that we are facing a global climate emergency, the effects of which are becoming ever clearer in our daily lives. It is crucial that we do everything we can to change our own behaviours and the behaviours of the world’s biggest corporations, and that we influence governments in order to secure a positive future for our planet."
— Association of Independent Music (AIM)

"It´s high time the music business took the intiative in some of these crucial environmental, cultural and political issues facing the UK and more importantly, the planet. For too long, we have been too passive. But we can not rely on governments to look after the planet, they can barely look after themselves."
— Bella Union Records

Music Declares Emergency is an independent group created by music business professionals and artists concerned at the lack of a cohesive, industry wide response to the climate emergency. It believes that the music community can drive forward public understanding and pressure government to take immediate action on climate and biodiversity loss. MDE aims to facilitate industry-wide conversations to harness the collective cultural and economic power of the music business to achieve a net zero greenhouse gas emissions future for the music industry.
