Save the Harrison #5!

Save the Harrison #5!

On Friday 4th August the fifth in the series of concerts organised by New Roots to raise money for the grassroots venue The Harrison will feature performances from Gabriel Moreno, Louis Brennan and Rob Corcoran!

For the past 18 years The Harrison in King´s Cross has hosted some of the finest intimate folk and roots concerts in London. Shockingly they have recently received a court arbitration judgement ordering them to pay their landlord the full rent for the entire Covid period. This includes all the time that the venue was closed under Lockdown, coming to a total of £99,000.

Obviously, this is a devastating and incomprehensible judgement, which bankrupts the business and, as a Sole Trader, owner Paul Michelmore personally. To save The Harrison and everything Paul and his team have built over the past 18 years, there must be an appeal against the judgement, but this will cost up to £10k in legal fees. To help raise money for the appeal, promoter New Roots and a number of artists have come together to put on these very special gigs.

Friday 4th August 7.30pm - Gabriel Moreno, Louis Brennan, Rob Corcoran

Tickets £12 / £7 (selling fast!)

London-based Dubliner Louis Brennan is a singer-songwriter in the folk tradition. His folk however aren’t the field hands and travelling minstrels of yore but the repressed middle managers and ennui-ridden urbanites of late-stage capitalism. They populate tales of bad sex, half-drunk commutes and interpersonal claustrophobia delivered in Brennan’s cracked baritone, peppered with pitch-black humour. His debut album ´Dead capital´ was released in 2018 and awarded 9/10 by Americana Uk who called it "an outstanding album; deep, dark and demanding of attention”. It garnered favourable comparisons to Kris Kristofferson, Guy Clark and Leonard Cohen. A handful of standalone singles, including the duet ‘A Full House’ with AMAUK award winning Michele Stodart of The Magic Numbers (described by Holler as "another jaw dropper from the singer that gave us the beautiful ´Black Limousine´ earlier this year”), have received radio support from Ralph McLean, Bob Harris, Lonesome Highway and other stalwarts of the UK country and Americana scene. His most recent LP ´Love Island´ has been called “an essential album for our times” by Lonesome Highway, with Brennan’s sharp tongue delving further into his dystopian vision of society.

Dublin troubadour Rob Corcoran is a much respected figure on the London roots scene, with folk legend Christy Moore including his version of Corcoran’s brilliant ‘Ringing That Bell’ as a key song in his current touring set and on his recently released live album. Corcoran’s lyrically compelling, beautifully observed songs are drenched in Celtic soul, drawing from the same deep wells that serve Van Morrison and Mike Scott so well. Present too is a strong thread of influence from the heart-on-sleeve poetry of John Prine, Hank Williams and Leonard Cohen. He recently supported legendary Irish roots artist Mary Coughlan in the UK, and continues to hone his craft both solo and with his full band around the best folk venues of Britain and Ireland.

“This man can surely sing, and he has a great band behind him. He says some things that need to be said” Christy Moore

“I implore you to check him out, don’t let me down… this guy is special.” Americana UK 9/10

Gabriel Moreno is a Gibraltarian poet and singer songwriter. After periods spent living in Barcelona, New York and across South America, he currently resides in London. He has been likened to poet-singers such as Nick Cave, Bill Callahan and Leonard Cohen, and has released four albums to date. His moist recent album, The Year of the Rat, has received rave reviews and airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music. In 2022, Gabriel and his band the Quivering Poets(Ned Cartwright on piano and Alice Mary Williamson on clarinet) performed at the main stage of The Great British Folk Festival, ELY Folk Festival, Rochester Folk Festival, Purbeck Valley Folk Festival, Wilderness Festival, Costa Del Folk Festival (Stratford-Upon-Avon), Blues and Roots Festival Cornwall and many other festivals around the country. Gabriel is also the Cultural Ambassador of Gibraltar.

“ A seductive, acoustic, outpouring of hope in a dark place, Gabriel Moreno looks to the UK’s future with a humble, sanguine spark of light” - Mitch Mosk, Atwood Magazine, New York

The future of Folk and Honey-
Paul and The Harrison have been fundamental in setting up and maintaining Folk & Honey, as a place for musicians and venues to list their gigs and promote their work. If The Harrison doesn´t survive then we will lose Folk & Honey too.
