Save The Harrison! Number 4

Save The Harrison! Number 4

On 13th July the fourth in the series of concerts organised by New Roots to raise money for the grassroots venue The Harrison, will feature performances from Michele Stodart, James Riley, Our Man In The Field and Leonie Evans!

For the past 18 years The Harrison in King´s Cross has hosted some of the finest intimate folk and roots concerts in London. Shockingly they have recently received a court arbitration judgement ordering them to pay their landlord the full rent for the entire Covid period. This includes all the time that the venue was closed under Lockdown, coming to a total of £99,000.

Obviously, this is a devastating and incomprehensible judgement, which bankrupts the business and, as a Sole Trader, owner Paul Michelmore personally. To save The Harrison and everything Paul and his team have built over the past 18 years, there must be an appeal against the judgement, but this will cost up to £10k in legal fees. To help raise money for the appeal, promoter New Roots and a number of artists have come together to put on these very special gigs.

Thursday 13th July 7.30pm Michele Stodart, James Riley, Our Man In The Field and Leonie Evans
Tickets £12 advance / £7 discount / £15 door

MICHELE STODART´s career with the Magic Numbers has taken her around the world to the biggest stages, selling huge amounts of records and receiving a Mercury nomination along the way. She has to date released two critically acclaimed, beautifully written roots and soul-drenched solo albums
´Stodart´s solo career..sits in a rich tradition that encompasses such touchstone female performers as Karen Dalton and Judee Sill...Etta James..Alison Moorer [&] Gillian Welch. Pieces may well be the most impressive record she´s ever made, with or without brother Romeo and band´. MOJO Magazine

Think of OUR MAN IN THE FIELD, AKA Alexander Ellis, as an independent correspondent, with his works dispatches from his travels. So classically crafted are Ellis’ songs that you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve heard Our Man In The Field somewhere before. He and his brilliant band of pedal steel, guitar, banjo, upright bass and drums (with fine harmony backing vocals) take inspiration from the alt-Americana and Caledonian soul stylings of Van Morrison, Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Ryan Adams and Wilco. His own sound is indefinable yet familiar- its introspective, intimate and deeply soulful style stands comfortably alongside modern day artists Ray LaMontagne, Damien Rice and Joe Purdy.

Anglo-American troubadour (and sometime rooftop balladeer) JAMES RILEY crafts music which seamlessly blends joyously anthemic songcraft, lucidly poetic storytelling, and a disarmingly candid folk voice.

LEONIE EVANS began performing at the age of 5 and has never stopped....Her never ending tour has brought her to the furthest reaches of Britain, Europe, Japan & the USA. What sets her apart from just a discography and a list of tour dates are the countless guest vocals, collaborations, performances in the streets and jazz clubs of New Orleans, London, Bristol, spontaneous jams at parties and festivals and, perhaps most precious of all, the sprawling web of connections growing between Leonie and her ever-expanding family of musical sisters and brothers.

Further dates:

Thursday 3rd August
Gabriel Moreno, Louis Brennan, Rob Corcoran

The future of Folk and Honey-
Paul and The Harrison have been fundamental in setting up and maintaining Folk & Honey, as a place for musicians and venues to list their gigs and promote their work. If The Harrison doesn´t survive then we will lose Folk & Honey too.
