Save the Harrison! The Magic Lantern, Copper Viper, MG Boulter, Alice Phelps

Save the Harrison! The Magic Lantern, Copper Viper, MG Boulter, Alice Phelps

On Sunday 20th August there will be another fantastic event in the series of concerts organised by New Roots to raise money for grassroots venue The Harrison

For the past 18 years The Harrison in King´s Cross has hosted some of the finest intimate folk and roots concerts in London. Shockingly they have recently received a court arbitration judgement ordering them to pay their landlord the full rent for the entire Covid period. This includes all the time that the venue was closed under Lockdown, coming to a total of £99,000.

Obviously, this is a devastating and incomprehensible judgement, which bankrupts the business and, as a Sole Trader, owner Paul Michelmore personally. To save The Harrison and everything Paul and his team have built over the past 18 years, there must be an appeal against the judgement, but this will cost up to £10k in legal fees. To help raise money for the appeal, promoter New Roots and a number of artists have come together to put on these very special gigs.

Sunday 20th August 6.30pm - The Magic Lantern, Copper Viper, MG Boulter, Alice Phelps (quartet)

Tickets £12 / £7 (selling fast!)

The Magic Lantern is the musical moniker of acclaimed British-Australian singer-songwriter and composer Jamie Doe, an artist dedicated to examining the limitless depth of human experience in our search for meaning. Born in Australia before moving to the UK at 12, he is a part of a thriving scene of contemporary musicians living in London who sit across and between genres from folk to jazz, to go about things their own way. He has released four critically lauded albums to date, and garnered over two million plays on Spotify. His most recent release ‘A Reckoning Bell’ manages to sound both dreamy and direct, the richness of the orchestration belying the devastating songwriting. Lyrically, A Reckoning Bell is one of The Magic Lantern’s most powerful and accomplished achievements. Containing references as diverse as Woodie Guthrie, Macbeth, the New Testament and Don Quixote, it is most notable for Doe’s knack of using startling simplicity to imply something greater than the sum of its parts.

Copper Viper is an acoustic folk trio from London, comprised of prolific songwriter and guitarist Robin Joel Sangster, fiddle/mandolin player Duncan Menzies and banjo picker Dana Immanuel. Drawing inspiration from the British folk and American country/bluegrass traditions, Copper Viper’s music marries haunting melodies and intricate vocal harmonies with searing instrumental passages to create a stylistic blend that is at once familiar and unique. The group recorded their debut album “Cut It Down, Count The Rings” at Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville WA, USA with platinum-selling producer Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Brandi Carlile). Since the release of “Cut It Down, Count The Rings” in April 2019, Copper Viper have toured extensively in the UK, Europe and Canada, performing at venues such as London’s prestigious Green Note, Glastonbury Festival and the Cambridge Folk Festival where they were nominated for the Christian Raphael Prize for new artists.

Alice Phelps leads her band on harp and powerfully husky vocals, augmented by two violins and backing vocals. Influenced by folk from near and far, Celtic to Eastern, she experiments with delay, blues motifs, and intricate melodies and rhythms to create a melting pot of contemporary and traditional styles, traversing the territories between psychedelic folk and cosmic jazz. This is a truly unique band, not to be missed.

The future of Folk and Honey- Paul and The Harrison have been fundamental in setting up and maintaining Folk & Honey, as a place for musicians and venues to list their gigs and promote their work. If The Harrison doesn´t survive then we will lose Folk & Honey too.
