ODIA´s latest single Gods of Guilt is set to be released on 11th August

A blend of trad folk and EDM, the track opens with a clap of thunder and pulsating strings, building an ethereal intro atmosphere to the first break. On the drop we meet Rosie Brownhill´s serene and wistful whistle, which leads the melodic contours for the main body of the song. This is underpinned by Stuart Spence´s slick electonica production, giving a steady rolling drive. There is a funky, dark electro breakdown halfway through, which almost slips into Drum & Bass, before dropping comfortably back into the whistle groove.

The single is released along with a music video, which has some beautifully choreographed Scottish contemporary dance, set to the backdrop of the stunning Scottish countryside, and provides a brilliant cinematic visual representation of the track.

The crossover between EDM and folk is now well-established. After all, making people dance is the main purpose of both. The BPM of a rave and a ceilidh are essentially the same and bands like The Elephant Sessions are selling out stadiums on it. However, getting acoustic instruments and electronically generated sounds to sit comfortably together takes some skill. Also, Celtic tunes are repetitive and do not develop. This, combined with the formulaic nature of EDM production, can make it hard to keep to a tune fresh and interesting the whole way through.

I am pleased to say that ODIA have done a solid job here, although, as far as I am concerned, one can always take it further.

All in all, an enjoyable release. ODIA have successfully turned a timeless Celtic melody into an expansive contemporary EDM track.
