Reg Meuross - Stolen From God Project Announces Short UK Tour in Black History Month

Legendary troubadour Reg Meuross has announced three live shows as a duo with rising star of the folk world, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne. The duo will preview songs from Reg’s Stolen From God song cycle, uncovering stories about the SW of England’s involvement in the Transatlantic slave trade

For the last four years, uncovering these stories has been the mission of Somerset-based songwriter, Reg Meuross, for his song cycle, Stolen From God. The project gained support from the Halsway Manor National Centre for Folk Arts´ Incubator Bursary fund in 2020, following which Reg brought together Senegalese kora master Jali Fily Cissokho, concertina player Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne and vocalist Jaz Gayle to record the album with recording engineer Tom Jobling at Mill Farm Music studios in Dorset this September. Thanks to the support of Halsway, and the generosity of Mill Farm Music, Stolen From God will be released later this year, and the songs can be heard live on a short run of concerts during Black History Month.

With evidence of the slave trade across the South-West of England, and a real need for the stories to be told, Stolen From God features a set of incredible songs, telling these challenging and often harrowing tales of the past.

Reg explains: “Evidence of involvement in Transatlantic slavery is everywhere. All of this hideous criminality, actively masquerading as greatness and Empire, slowly reveals how many of the glorious achievements of Britain’s colonial past are tainted by the fact that the map of empire is the blueprint for the history of slavery and racism.”

Cohen adds “Stolen From God brings attention to a seriously neglected era of British history with songs that are genuinely thought-provoking.  These new stories need to be heard”.
