Tu-Kay and Ryan - EP Review

Tu-Kay and Ryan - EP Review

Tu-Kay and Ryan are an award-winning acoustic duo from Northamptonshire (UK). Their latest EP ‘The Little Things’ is a celebration of the preciousness of life, appreciating the little moments that help define us as human beings.

The first half of the EP explores stripped back delicate arrangements, gently accompanying their sweet male/female vocal harmonies. Taking inspiration from folk and Americana, they utilize soft acoustic fingerpicking, embedded with simple string lines. They then combine this with country style drums which gives the songs a subtle drive.

The second half of the EP has more rock influences with a full band sound. The penultimate track ‘Meditate On This’ strays even further from their folk roots introducing a funk/blues groove. The last song, ‘Madman’s Pit’ also has a bit of Fairport Convention flavour to it.

This is an EP of two halves; starting sweet and soft but shifting to a more raucous finale. The contrast of styles is engaging, and I’ll be interested to see how they develop this in future releases as they continue to carve out their own sound.
