‘Memories of the Mayflower & Other Tales’ - Album Review

Exploring new waters with the new album from One Voice, One Cello & A Mad Belgian.

‘Memories of the Mayflower & Other Tales’ has to be one of the most interesting and eclectic albums that I’ve come across this year. Bringing together the exceptional musicianship of Rupert Gillett (cello and vocals) and Jennifer El Gammal (Soprano sax and vocals); One Voice, One Cello & A Mad Belgian delivers a beautifully recorded live album combining musical virtuosity, a strong sense of narrative and more than a pinch of humour!

The first half of the album is a song cycle reciting the tale of the Mayflower ship (berthed in Rotherhithe in 1620). It explores the tumultuous journey of the “Pilgrim Fathers”, who after suffering persecution for their religion in Elizabethan England, voyaged across the Atlantic to seek better lives. Upon arrival, almost half of the company died from disease and harsh conditions. The story is further brought to life with interspersed narration from the American actor Nathan Osgood and the songs are professionally researched, thanks to the yearlong collaborative efforts of local historian Graham Taylor.

Musically it is difficult to place into one genre. The storytelling nature of the songs is clearly rooted in folk song but the vocal delivery at times is more akin to musical theatre. As for the musicianship, they seem to be drawing influences from far and wide, helping to take the listener on an exciting musical adventure. It is seriously impressive to hear just two musicians covering such a diverse musical palette. Whether you’re a fan of tight vocal harmonies and A cappella rounds, wild jazz improvisation, or infectious rhythmic grooves, this album has something to offer for everyone.

Exciting, intriguing, and unique; I really wish I had been at the concert!
